STATEMENT BY WOMEN’S WAY ON THE SCOTUS RULING TO OVERTURN ROE V. WADE

The decision to eliminate the constitutional right to abortion will further exacerbate the gender wealth gap for millions across the country.

PHILADELPHIA – Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued their official opinion in the Dobbs V. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, eliminating the fundamental right to abortion established nearly 50 years ago in Roe V. Wade. This decision now leaves more than 36 million women of reproductive age – and other people who can become pregnant – without access to safe, affordable, and accessible abortions. It is critical to note that abortion is still legal and facilities that provide care are still open in Pennsylvania.

Statement from Diane Cornman-Levy, Chief Disruptor, WOMEN’S WAY:

“While we have waited with unease for the Supreme Court’s final opinion on Dobbs V. Jackson for months now and simultaneously witnessed the erosion of abortion access across the country, it is nevertheless devastating to receive confirmation today that Roe. V. Wade has been overturned, upending the 50-year constitutional right to abortion for millions across the country.

Abortion access and economic security have long proven to have deep connections. As we know full well, this decision will have the greatest impact on Americans with the fewest resources, not the wealthy or well connected. It will further exacerbate the gender wealth gap for women in our region and country, and disproportionately impact communities already harmed by systemic racism and discrimination, especially Black women. This cruel fact will mean that even larger health and economic burdens will be placed on our already most vulnerable community members. This is no accident. This is white supremacy in action.

Today, we are outraged and mourn the precedent overturning Roe has set and the statement it makes about the status of gender and racial equity in our country. Tomorrow, we must join hands even more firmly in solidarity with reproductive justice and advocacy organizations across the nation to fight for a better future. As long as women are denied economic and reproductive justice, WOMEN’S WAY will be here, fighting for the advancement of women, girls and gender and racial equity.”

ABOUT WOMEN’S WAY:

WOMEN’S WAY ‘s mission is to inspire and mobilize the community to invest in organizations and leaders that will advance the rights of and opportunities for women and girls and achieve gender equality for all. They hold a unique place in the nation’s history as the first “umbrella” funding federation in the United States specifically dedicated to women’s issues. Their organization was formed in the mid-1970s by seven women-led agencies that focused on wage equity, rape crises, domestic violence, reproductive freedom, and post-incarceration reentry. Because mainstream funding was not available for the progressive causes they championed, they joined together to raise a collective voice and generate critical funding for issues impacting women. Since our founding, WOMEN’S WAY has raised more than $24 million to enhance the lives of women, girls and families, and to provide vital support to the agencies that serve them.
